SPECIAL ECONOMIC ZONE, BORANADA (JODHPUR)


PREAMBLE


Special Economic Zones (SEZs) are specifically delineated duty-free enclaves treated as a foreign territory for the purpose of industrial, service and trade operations, with exemption from customs duties and a more liberal regime in respect of other levies, foreign investment and other transactions. Domestic regulations, restrictions and infrastructure inadequacies are sought to be eliminated in the SEZs for creating a hassle-free environment. The SEZ Scheme seeks to create a transparent system by introducing simplified procedures for enchancing productivity and making it easier to do business.

According to Government of India guidelines, SEZs can be developed in the public, private or joint sectors, or by the State Governments. They are expected to promote establishment of large, self-contained areas supported by world-class infrastructure oriented towards export production. Exploiting the full potential of the concept, SEZs would bring large dividends to the State in term of economic and industrial development and generation of new employment opportunities.


OBJECTIVES


This Special Economic Zone is proposed for Handicraft units only.

The prime objectives of the Government is to develop specially delineated economic zones conforming to the guidelines of the Government of India to provide enabling infrastructure and a hassle free environment to promote exports from the State. Special emphasis will be laid on development of product specific Special Economic Zones to harness inherent potential of the State in the fields of Handicrafts, which would result in increase in exports of these commodities with high value addition.


STATUS


Department of Commerce, Govt. of India approved SEZ at Boranada, Jodhpur for Handicraft units on July 22, 2003. Rajasthan Special Economic Zone Development Ordinance, 2003 promulgated and made effective from 26th July, 2003. Land for the SEZ, Boranada, Jodhpur in possession with RIICO. Department of Commerce & Department of Revenue, Govt. of India have notified the area on September 8, 2003 & September 25, 2003 respectively. State Government has also notified the area for SEZ, Boranada, Jodhpur on July 26, 2003. RIICO has been declared as a Developer / Promoter for this SEZ. Development Commissioner, SEZ NOIDA who is also Development Commissioner, SEZ, Jodhpur has approved the development plan of SEZ, Boranada, Jodhpur. Applications for land allotment have been invited at an allotment rate of Rs. 500 per sqm. Allotment commenced on "First come First serve basis". So far as an area of 222880 sqm. has been booked for 144 plots by 70 Handicraft units.
